Growing Forward in a New Season – Blossom Tip 67

What new season is unfolding in your life? Maybe you’re walking into something unknown — a fresh semester at school, different routine at work, unfamiliar rhythm at home — and you don’t know what to expect.

Maybe you’re grieving a loss, saying goodbye to an old friend, letting go of unaccomplished goals. Maybe you’re ready to start exploring and adjusting your expectations of yourself, others, or God.

If you’re like me, you’re starting the New Year by saying good-bye to an old way of life. Like it or not, things are different now! Maybe you don’t know what to expect – but you know somethingneeds to change. You’re tired of struggling with the same old problems, thoughts, self-inflicted wounds.

You don’t have to have it all planned, organized and mapped out. You don’t have to know every detail or what’ll happen first or last. All you need is an open heart, trusting spirit, and willing mind.

Growing Forward in a New Season

I’m celebrating two major milestones this January…

First, I’m going back to school for my MDiv (Master of Divinity). Fifteen years ago I wanted to be either a preacher or a teacher; I chose teaching because it made more sense. But I never stopped yearning to formally study the Bible, and I always regretted listening to the world instead of the Spirit. Classes start in two weeks!

Growing Forward

Second, I’m enjoying the release of my first traditionally published book. Today is the official release date of Growing Forward When You Can’t Go Back — and it only took 10 years, my whole heart, and an uncomfortably large piece of my soul to write.

I’ll be sharing little snippets of my book over the next ten weeks. Ten chapters in Growing Forward, ten glimpses into the lives of biblical and contemporary women. Biblical women who overcame loss, heartbreak and disappointments to blossom into who God created them to be. Contemporary women like you and me, who are growing forward despite unexpected or even devastating problems in life.

Here’s a tidbit from the Introduction:

“My mother was hospitalized several times, unable to cope with episodes of severe paranoia and hallucinations. During her treatments my younger half-sister and I lived in three different foster homes, plus a stint at a neighbor’s house. Even when my mom was well, living with her wasn’t easy; we often found ourselves wandering the streets in the middle of the night, sleeping in cardboard boxes in alleys and on the front steps of churches.”

The Blossom Tips

Every chapter includes five Blossom Tips, to help you:

  • Accept—and even embrace—a new season of life.
  • Take small steps forward in practical, creative, delightful ways!
  • Weave God’s love and power into your heart, thoughts, and daily life.

Each Blossom Tip highlights a different part of who you are: spirit, heart, soul, body, and brain. This holistic approach will help you grow in specific areas of your self, life, and relationships.

What to Do When Your Family Won’t Listen to You – Inspired by Genesis 34, I share three tips for coping with families who can’t hear or won’t accept you. I also expand on this encouragement from a reader: “The good news is that it is possible to have a wonderful life even if you feel like nobody cares,” says Lily on What to Remember When You Feel Like No One Cares. “You don’t have to let your family determine your value or your worthiness. You can’t make your family care [or listen to you], but you can determine how deeply you are going to let them impact you.”
